The MHSIBCA Executive Board voted to reschedule the 2008 Annual General Meeting in Midland from Saturday July 12 to Sunday July 13. All of the Golden Pin Verification Forms posted have not been officially reviewed for correctness. Anyone who wishes to help are more than welcome to join the team! MHSIBCA SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION (3-18-08)

For the first time last year, the MHSIBCA created a MHSIBCA Scholarship Fund to award scholarships to deserving athletes in High School Bowling. Six recipients were awarded scholarships ($500.00 each) by filling out a MHSIBCA Scholarship Application. Once again, this year the MHSIBCA will award scholarships as follows: One boy and one girl from each of the three Divisions (1, 2 and 3) will be a recipient of a $500.00 scholarship. Athletes applying must be a graduating senior with a 3.6 grade point average or higher.
Every graduating senior of the Academic All State Team will be mailed an application and invited to apply. Others who are not a member of the Academic All State Team and believe an error was committed should contact The Bowl Swami who will then advise the Awards/Scholarship Committee. Since the deadline is March 30, 2008 for scholarship applications, it is suggested that Academic All State Team members download the MHSIBCA Scholarship Application instead of waiting for the mailing. If there is a problem with downloading, Email The Bowl Swami.

GOLDEN PIN DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 23rd (3-18-08)

The MHSIBCA Awards Committee on Sunday, March 16, discussed the various problems with the Golden Pin and made the following decisions: (1) Based on the Region Event Field Statistics viewed from last year's Region Events and this year's, Region Events that showed a disparity of 10 or more pins difference would have the option to disallow. All other Region Event scores would stand. These decisions were predicated on several facts: (A) This year and last year were purported to be restrictive oil patterns directed from the MHSAA that should lower the general field average no more than 10 pins; (B) The oil patterns sent from the MHSAA this year were to be kept secret (and it was not the oil pattern described on the MHSAA Web Site) denying any coach or athlete any chance to learn what is needed to bowl that pattern; (C) Several Lane Managers got the oil pattern early and tested it. When they called to state it wasn't working, they were given permission to "tweak" the pattern which changed scoring. Several other Lane Managers claimed they were not told they could, or they were unaware. Some changed it the next day because it would not conform to the level of last year while others kept it the same. (D) Due to the inability of many/most centers not being able to put out oil patterns during the regular season, a restriction beyond lowering general field averages more than 10 pins from last year's events should not be allowed. (2) Due to the controversy and a few other problems, the deadline for this year's Golden Pin submissions should be extended for at least one more week.

MHSIBCA ALL STATE TEAMS SHOULD BE PUBLISHED BY 10:00 PM (3-17-08)

The MHSIBCA Awards Committee completed its selection of the four All State Teams and the results have arrived. All results must be converted into a file suitable for posting on this site. The Bowl Swami will make the conversion, but he also has to report on decisions from the Executive Board meeting, as well. All will hopefully be published by 10:00 PM. Personal business may delay that, as BS and wife will once again be visiting a funeral home along with having to meet with a tax accountant. So, Keep the Faith...and Keep the Green...Happy St. Patrick's Day!

AWARDS COMMITTEE MEETS TODAY TO SELECT ALL STATE TEAMS (3-16-08)

As reported in an article on 3-10-08, the 2008 All State Teams will be selected this morning when the committee meets in Flint. The problems with the Golden Pin will also be discussed more thoroughly. In the afternoon, the MHSIBCA Executive Board will meet to plan the MHSIBCA Awards Banquet and the MHSIBCA Annual General Meeting. A report of all should be published no later than Monday.

KEGEL PATTERNS SUGGESTED FOR NEXT SEASON (3-15-08)

The MHSAA Bowling Committee, with guidance from Randy Allen of MHSAA, reviewed many areas of High School Bowling to SUGGEST (suggestions are then reviewed by the MHSAA Council before acceptance) guidelines for next season. The most controversial issue was oil patterns used during Region and State Final Events. The heated discussion uncovered many facts, but the most underlying fault of problems that may have occurred was not educating coaches and lane personnel early enough in the season to prepare for conditions that might be faced in post season competition. After the major discussion, it was decided to select three of the Kegel Challenge Oil Patterns, as Post Season Oil Patterns. It was also decided to inform coaches as soon as possible about these patterns, so coaches and athletes can become familiar and learn the steps necessary to compete fairly. While only one of the patterns would be selected each year for post season (a January 15 announcement of that condition was suggested), coaches and athletes would be expected to practice all three. The MHISBCA Tournament Committee will suggest to Invitational Tournaments that they should select one of those patterns for their event. That pattern, then, will be posted along with their Tournament Posting.
Coaches who wish to begin their education and view the Kegel Challenge Oil Patterns should click on the links provided: Broadway Oil Pattern - Middle Road Oil Pattern - Beaten Path Oil Pattern. If you are unable to download or view the patterns, Email The Bowl Swami.

MHSAA BOWLING COMMITTEE MEETS TODAY (3-13-08)

Meeting today at the MHSAA East Lansing office, the MHSAA Bowling Committee will review items from this past season. The committee is composed of Coaches, Athletic Directors and Administrators who have volunteered. Member Coaches who wish to be considered for the Bowling Committee in future years, should ask their Athletic Director to send their name to Randy Allen of the MHSAA.  Member coaches and other interested parties were invited to send comments and suggestions to either the MHSAA or The Bowl Swami (SEE: Bowling Committee Review Meeting of 2-27-08). All recommendations and/or comments sent to The Bowl Swami have been given to other Member Coaches on the committee. Suggestions and/or recommendations considered at that meeting will then be sent to the MHSAA Council for approval at a later date. Not all recommendations for change are approved, as there are many factors to weigh or consider before making changes. One of the biggest concerns facing the MHSAA is the need to balance the various sports seasons. While there has been discussion about moving the season for the sport of bowling, most of the comments/recommendations sent in have asked that it remain a winter sport. However, even if the Bowling Committee votes to remain in the winter, the final decision rests with the MHSAA Council.

GOLDEN PIN DEADLINE MAY BE EXTENDED (3-12-08)

While the MHSIBCA Award Committee is meeting this weekend to select All State Teams, they will also be reviewing the controversy over lane conditions during the Post Season Region Events and how it has affected averages used for the Golden Pin Award. If necessary, the deadline for accepting Golden Pin Verification Forms may be extended to allow all Member Coaches an opportunity to revamp forms if necessary. More information will be forthcoming after this weekend's meeting.

MICHIGAN MIDDLE SCHOOL BOWLING CONFERENCE PROPOSAL (3-11-08)

A committee of coaches is being formed to review Rules and Guidelines for a Michigan Middle School Bowling Conference. It will be setting up suggested guidelines for a Fall Season (September-November) of bowling for Michigan Middle Schools. A coordinator will be needed for each Division set up in the State. Coaches or educators interested in becoming a coordinator and who wish to join the MMSBC Committee should Email The Bowl Swami. Current MMSBC Committee Members are Scott Walkup-Coldwater, Dave Kowalski-Bangor John Glenn, Laura Abele-Warren Regina, and Dan Macha-Ithaca. The Middle School Conference Standings Page has all ready been developed with the Southwest 8 Conference Standings posted.

AWARDS COMMITTEE MEETS SUNDAY TO SELECT ALL STATE TEAMS (3-10-08)

The 2008 All State Teams will be selected Sunday, March 16 when the committee meets in Flint. Three teams (1st, 2nd and Honorable Mention) are designated for each Division. An All Academic (graduating seniors only) group is also selected. All teams will be posted on this site late Sunday night. Mr. and Miss Bowler and the Dream Team, chosen from the graduating seniors. will be announced at a later date by the Detroit Free Press. Coaches who encountered problems and have not sent in their All State applications should contact the designated Awards Committee Member for their Division: Division 1, Tom Stockton of Sterling Heights Stevenson; Division 2, Judy Jaeger of Livonia Ladywood; Division 3, Keith Krueger of Hemlock. Otherwise, contact The Bowl Swami.

POST SEASON COMMENTS AND RESULTS (3-10-08)

Coaches are being reminded that the deadline for voices to be heard in decisions for next season is no later than today, as reported in the Post Season Review Notice. Coaches who wish to view the MHSAA Region or State Finals Results will always find that page in the left hand column under "Info." It is labeled "Post Season."

MHSAA REGION EVENTS AND GOLDEN PIN AVERAGES (3-7-08)

Due to the disparity of lane conditions resulting in lower scoring in many Region Events compared to previous years, the Awards Committee has decided to give coaches the opportunity to disallow scores for the Golden Pin from certain Region Events. Regions 1, 2, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17 were selected based on a difference of 10 or more pins in average per athlete compared with last year's scores. Only scores from the Boys Category were used for this study, however it applies to Boys and Girls.
Coaches should note the following restrictions: (1) Minimum Game Requirement for disallowed Region Events will be lowered from 20 to 17. (2) Coaches can waive the right to disallow but must use all scores bowled in the Region Event by all athletes from that school. Coaches who have submitted Final Golden Pin Verification Forms or Coaches with questions are asked to Email The Bowl Swami with the decision whether they wish to use their scores or not.

POST SEASON NOTICE (3-3-08)

Another fantastic High School Bowling season is coming to a close after the State Finals, but there are numerous things to consider before finally closing the door. First, there are the MHISBCA Awards that need to be applied for. Secondly, the MHSAA Bowling Committee is meeting on Thursday, March 13 and would like your input. Next, the MHSIBCA Annual Awards Banquet information needs to be passed along to athletes. Fourth, the Annual General Meeting dates/times will be finalized at the MHSIBCA Executive Board Meeting on March 16. Last, there are a few other Post Season Items to address.
While Region Event Winners and State Finals Winners have received their awards from the MHSAA, your coach association provides numerous other awards to recognize the accomplishments of athletes and coaches. The MHSIBCA All State Award is given to four teams from each High School Division (1st Team, 2nd Team, Honorable Mention and All Academic
Seniors Only Team). Recipients selected will be invited to the MHSIBCA Annual Awards Banquet on April 13 for presentation of their awards. The Golden Pin Award recognizes the Top Averages in the State and requires a Golden Pin Verification Form be filled out. Top Score Certificate Awards are given for High Game and High Series that meet minimum requirements. The Top Ten Team scores are also issued certificates. Coach of the Year and Hall of Fame awards will also be presented at the annual banquet. Coaches with problems filling out forms or unable to meet deadlines for MHSIBCA Awards should contact The Bowl Swami via Email or Phone 313-885-1393 for assistance.
Each year there have been changes and improvements made in the High School Bowling program. The rules and guidelines for the sport of Bowling is carefully considered by a committee of Coaches, Athletic Directors and Administrators at a Bowling Committee meeting. That committee meets on Thursday, March 13 at the MHSAA offices. Suggestions considered at that meeting are then sent to the MHSAA Council for approval at a later date. A Preliminary Agenda addresses issues that will be discussed. Coaches are encouraged to either Email The Bowl Swami or contact the MHSAA to express their opinions. One item not on the agenda is a possible consideration of changing the Bowling Season from a Winter Season to a Spring Season. Coaches are especially asked to send an opinion on that matter.
The MHSIBCA Annual Awards Banquet will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, April 13 at Royal Scot Lanes and Banquet Center in Lansing. It provides an opportunity for select athletes and coaches to receive their awards. All coaches are encouraged to attend this event. Coaches unable to attend who have athletes receiving awards are asked to help by contacting others attending to pick up those awards. Tickets for the event are discounted 25% for athletes and Member Coaches. A Round Table Discussion will be moderated in the morning from 10:00 AM to Noon for those coaches wishing to attend.
An election of officers (President, 1st Vice President and 2nd Vice President) and At Large Executive Committee Members for Regions 4-5-6 will be held at the MHSIBCA Annual General Meeting. Coaches wishing to run, or nominate someone, for office should Email the Nominating Committee Chairperson, Debbie Alexander. The dates/times of the Annual General Meeting will be decided at an Executive Board Meeting on March 16. Notices will be sent to all Member Coaches.
Finally, there are many activities and functions that take place during the off-season for High School Bowling. Events (including the Michigan All Star and Bowl Swami Singles Tournaments) are, or will be posted on the "Events" or "Post Season Events" pages under
ACTIVITIES in the Left Hand Column on www.mhsibca.com.

MHSAA BOWLING (REVIEW) COMMITTEE (2-27-08)

There have been many opinions expressed regarding the MHSAA Region Qualifiers and other aspects of High School Bowling from this season. Oftentimes, the comments are made when athletes or coaches have negative experiences and feel changes should be made. Member Coaches who wish to see changes in certain areas of High School Bowling should either contact the MHSAA with their comments or let members of the MHSAA Bowling Committee know their feelings. In all cases, it is better to put it in writing and not just make comments like, "Change that!" but rather make a suggestion of what to do in place of that which is happening.
The MHSAA Bowling Committee, just like other Sport Committees, meets shortly after a season is completed to review all areas of the sport and make recommendations. This year, the Committee has 12 members of which four are Member Coaches. The rest of the Committee is composed of one Non-Member Coach, four Athletic Directors, one Principal, one Superintendent and The Bowl Swami. There is a Preliminary Agenda that will be followed. Coaches who wish to send in recommendations (
NO LATER THAN March 10) may Email The Bowl Swami, and he will pass the comments along to the other Member Coaches and present all comments to the rest of the Committee on Thursday, March 13. Let your voice be heard!

MATTHEW PAUL FRANKFURTH (2-26-08)

Sadly we announce the passing of High School Bowler Matthew Paul Frankfurth from Waterford Kettering.  He was the son of Member Coaches, David and Dianna Frankfurth and the brother of Joshua Frankfurth who also was a High School Bowler. We shall miss him dearly.

HOW TO BE SEATED AT TOURNAMENTS (2-18-08)

It wasn't too long ago that watching a young person bowl, on Saturdays or other days, was an easy proposition. Just simply grab a chair and sit down. The bowling center was nearly empty and plenty of seats were available. Those days are gone! What has taken its place has led to many a confrontation that sometimes leads to physical violence.
In today's world, with High School Bowling growing out of proportions, and unlimited crowds converging on (ill-equipped for seating) bowling centers, a seat becomes a very valuable commodity. Not only arguments, but outright fights have erupted over the possession of a chair that really does not belong to any spectator. It belongs to the Bowling Center, and the steadfast rule, that is steadily broken, is that it cannot be moved. It must remain in space. Well, it may have taken four or more years to solve the problem, but the Highland Milford spectators have come to our rescue with an excellent idea. it should have been easy to figure, but sometimes easiness only comes with years of patience.
Sherry Guertin of Milford has provided us with pictures of their barstool sized folding chairs that they take to every Invitational Tournament and Regional Event. Rumor has it they were purchased at Ikea, but we suggest you start dialing numbers or googling for providers, as those crowded Regional Events are only a few days away. Care to look? Just click Milford Folding Chairs.

MHSIBCA ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET (2-18-08)

All MHSIBCA Awards will be distributed at the Awards Banquet. Coach of the Year and Hall of Fame honorees are recognized at this ceremony. Athletes selected to the All State Teams (this includes Academic) are honored as well. Other Award recipients are also invited and will have their Awards personally honored. This includes the Golden Pin and Top Scores. MHSIBCA Scholarships are also presented.
The MHSIBCA Awards Banquet Ticket Request Form will be posted soon.

Coaches sending reports or information for Rankings must send them no later than 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 18 to the Ranking Committee. The fourth edition of the 2008 MHSIBCA Poll-Rankings was delayed for one week due to the problems associated with the Web Site. The Rankings will be posted on noon of Feb 21. MHSIBCA RANKING POLLS NEED INPUT FROM COACHES (1-24-08)

Coaches, there were many sounds of grumbling and complaints from those in the High School Bowling conclave. The moans were about the Ranking Poll that came out on January 17. Many schools that could/should have been ranked were missing from the poll. The problem was that many Conference Standing Sheets were never sent in to MHSIBCA, and coaches from various Conferences did not send in a report to the Ranking Committee. If coaches wish to see their teams ranked (and this is very important to the athletes), they should contact The Ranking Committee.

295 PARTICIPATING BOWLING SCHOOLS - 79 WITH MHSIBCA MEMBER COACHES (10-30-07)

As of October 30, 2007, only 79 schools have coaches who joined or renewed their membership. The Athletic Director mailings will going out in a few days. The AD's will be apprised whether their school has a coach member or not. Schools must have at least one coach member for their athletes to be eligible for All State and many other MHSIBCA awards. Also, other benefits of our association will not be availed to non-members.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MAILINGS TO BE SENT SOON (10-24-07)

Each year, we send out a direct mailing to Athletic Directors about our association. We advise AD's about our organization and the many benefits and awards that can only be obtained by member coaches. A list of schools that have members is included with that mailing. Coaches who have not renewed their membership should do so immediately to have their school's name included. There are 281 high schools in Michigan participating in High School Bowling. As of this date, only 68 of those schools have an officially paid member in our organization.

Included in that mailing is a packet for High School Bowling Coaches that contains an application, and copies of various award forms. Every member coach should guarantee that their Athletic Director passes that packet along to them. Last year, many coaches did not receive the packet.

BOWL SWAMI and THE SHADOW DONATE $600 TO MHSIBCA SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Bowl Swami is issuing a challenge to any and all coaches, bowling centers, or others! He has reached into his own pocket, and that of The Shadow, to put up $600.00, along with the $1,000.00 donated by the Michigan Junior Varsity Championship, for MHSIBCA Scholarships this year. This year's goal is to reach $3,000.00 so the MHSIBCA can provide six $500.00 scholarships to Student Athletes in High School Bowling.
There will be two scholarships per Division, one each for a Boy and a Girl in their respective Division. Eligible Student Athletes will be selected from the All State Applications that are submitted. The eligibility will be primarily based on the Academic portion of the Application and those seniors selected for the All Academic Teams will be asked to submit further proof of qualification for the scholarship. More details will be forthcoming from the Awards Committee.
The challenge has been made! If others wish to step up and donate, the goal could not only be reached, but perhaps more scholarships could be awarded. Those accepting the challenge should Email their commitment to the Bowl Swami.
