NORTHERN LAKES February 18, 2008 TURSELL BLASTS 298 IN SEASON FINALEThe last game of the last meet of the year has had a way of producing excitement in high school bowling, and history repeated itself Sunday at Airway Lanes in the Northern Lakes’ Conference final meet of the year. Danny Tursell, a junior from Walled Lake Northern, electrified the house as he tossed strike after strike in the second game in a match with Oxford. After the tenth and eleventh strikes the crowd roared. Then, Dan stepped up in the twelfth, looking cool and in control, and rolled what looked to be the perfect ball: down the lane, perfect speed, good line, nice flip, and – pocket seven-ten split. The ultimate bad break – and Tursell had to settle for 298. As good as the near perfecto was, it ranks #2 in the high game of the year race to Eric Christensen’s 299 tossed earlier in the season. Christensen and his Walled Lake Central teammates wrapped up a perfect year by winning the Northern Lakes’ post-season tournament by the slimmest margin possible 15.5-14.5 over a strong Clarkston team. The same squad won the conference title three weeks earlier with a record of 7-1. Central tossed 1120 in the first regular game and a lofty 2115 team series – the second week in a row they bettered the 1100 and 2100 marks. Christensen, the average leader in the conference, tossed a 259 in game one, while Ethan Michaels added 237, Bret Abraham 219, Jake Reid 214 and Mike Berg 191 for that 1120 game that earned 7 ½ of the possible nine points. They now needed 3 ½ points to secure the championship. But Clarkston would not go quietly. They had earned six Baker points earlier in the contest, and could still win the match by doing the near impossible against such a powerhouse like Central: win eight of nine points. The second game was proof that it’s not over until it’s over, and the Clarkston kids came roaring back. Paul Anderson started the rebound with a big 235 game, winning his point easily. Coach made a lineup change, and a split score won a point in the #2 position. Jake Reid easily won his point for Central with a 246 to Jake Smith’s 156, but Brian Steele couldn’t hang on to win his point in the #4 position. So, it all came down to the anchor position, and Travis Nesbitt did all he could, tossing a big 241 to Christensen’s 173. But it was all too little, too late, as Clarkston fell one point short of pulling off the miracle. Central’s big 1120 game was the difference in the match putting the Clarkston guys in a 111- pin deficit they just couldn’t overcome. There were many other good scores in the boys’ varsity ranks, showing that the kids are ready to light it up in the MHSAA regional meet Friday and Saturday of this week at Wonderland Lanes. In the match between Waterford Mott and Lake Orion, Jeff Suma Jr. tossed 236 in 421, Kyle Young 22, John Frye 224 and Robert Bondon 212 for the Dragons, as they edged by Mott for third place in the tournament. For Mott, Carl Boldt raced to a 235 and 418, and Stu Leser added a 211, but that was not enough as the Lake Orion team raced back from a dismal start to catch all nine points in the second game, totaling a whopping 1068, getting the pivotal two points for team series.
Walled Lake Western rolled to a win over Waterford Kettering 20 ½ - 9 ½, taking fifth place in the tournament. Mark Walker had the big game in this match with a 257, with Marc Sanchez adding 211, Ryan Doud 210 & 204, and Kevin Watler 206 to the cause. Matt Frankfurth rolled his way to a nice 225 game, Jake Squire added 216 and Chris Craft a 201 for the Kettering Captains. In addition to Tursell’s big game, Robbie McGuire tossed 216 and Nick Schilling a 209 in Northern’s win over Oxford in the battle for the basement. Oxford just couldn’t get anything going, dropping all ten Baker points, and they never bounced back. Tyler Heichel was high with 193, Ben Griggs had 191, and Mike Magyar added 187. But with the talent out there now, you need 200 or better in most cases to win a point, and the Wildcats just couldn’t get on track.
In varsity girls’ action, Waterford Kettering proved that their ‘over-time’ win for the conference title was no fluke as they earned a 17-13 win over Walled Lake Central to win the post-season tournament. Junior Holly Broadwater started off her day by tossing the high game of the year with 266, then added a 238 in the second game, for a big 504 total, also best in the circuit for the season. Sarah Nagel, bowling in her final conference match as a high school bowler got back to form rolling a nice 227 in 415 to help secure the win. Kaili Millbauer was not going to let her Central team go out with a whimper as she tossed 255 in 406. Although the match was already over with Central dropping all ten Baker points and six of nine points in the first regular game, the team rallied to shoot a big 1048 that included 235 from Sarah Johnson and 214 from Chelsea Castle. Walled Lake Northern emerged the victor in the match deciding 3rd and 4th places over a strong Clarkston team that struggled through the afternoon. Terra Derr lead Northern with 209 in 375, and Alana Brown, brought up from the JV ranks earlier in the season added, a nice 202 in 386 to the 27-3 win. Clarkston’s Jessie Lambouris was high with 210, and Kelly Anderson added 196. The Oxford girls had their match with Waterford Mott won after the first game, winning all ten Baker points and eight of nine points in the first regular game, to wrap up 5th place in the tournament. Liz LaFramboise had the big game for the Wildcats with 242, while Kristy Kaer was high for the Corsairs with 182 in 361. Lake Orion ended up in 7th place as they bowled the ‘bye’ team in their last outing of the year. Carlye Dalkert led the Dragons with 207 in 363 and Danielle Geiger added a 180, and Sarai Stankiewicz was consistent with a pair of 166 games. So, the conference season and tournament champs have been decided for the final time in the Northern Lakes Conference. Things will change next year as the Walled Lake and Waterford teams join the newly formed Kensington Lakes Activities Association, Oxford will join a Flint-based conference, while Lake Orion and Clarkston will find new conferences to compete in. It has been a good ride with these eight teams. Our Northern Lakes group has produced regional champs, many state finalists, many golden pin awardees, and bowlers who are now dominant in adult leagues. It will be different but exciting next year as we reorganize and move on to new horizons.

February 11, 2008 BIG BAKER SCORE HIGHLIGHTS JV’S LAST MEETIt isn’t often a junior varsity team is the lead story of a bowling meet, but that is exactly the case this week as the Walled Lake Central JV boys’ team fired Baker games of 264 and 235 for a huge 499 total. According to Harry Burkey, president and statistician of the Michigan High School Bowling Coaches Association, the big set is fourth best in the state this year including all varsity teams, and is a state record for JV teams. Waterford Kettering, bowling against Central, had to be impressed with such a show of strength, but they were not intimidated as they came back in the regular games to win the match 16-14, proving it’s not over until the last pin falls. It was an exciting start for the last week in the conference where all teams – JV and varsity- would be bowling together for the last time this season. The JV teams will be at the state tournament next weekend at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights, and the varsity teams will be finishing up the last week of the post-season tournament at Airway Lanes in Waterford. I guarantee you the varsity boys were looking over their shoulder as those Central JV boys set the house on fire – knowing well that these guys are ready to challenge them for their spots on varsity next year. In varsity action, #1 Walled Lake Central defeated Waterford Mott in a match where Mott swept the Baker points but could not hold on for the win, going down 18-12. Michael Berg and Brett Abraham both fired 248 games for Central, Eric Christensen a 247, and Stephen Hamilton a 238, in a beautiful team effort where every player had 400 or better for the day. Abraham was high with 463, Christensen tossed 430, Hamilton 426, Berg 415 and Jake Reid 401, giving the team a grand total of 2135, a new season-high for the conference. For Mott, Stu Leser was on track with 227 in 439, and Carl Boldt added a nice 212. #3 Clarkston rolled over Lake Orion 25-5 in the other match that would determine who’s in the roll-off next week for tournament champions. Travis Nesbitt was high in the conference with 251 and 467, and Jake Smith added 206 in 407 to help his team advance. Clarkston won all the Baker points as they tossed 205 abd 223 for a 427 total. Robert Bondon was high for the Dragons with 204 in 385, and Blake Stephen added a 205 to the cause. In other matches, Walled Lake Western downed Oxford 18-12, with Ryan Doud leading the winners with a very solid 244 and 455. He had help from Kevin Watler who added a nice 214 game. Western won all the Baker points in this contest, and Oxford never recovered. Steven Lafnear was high for the Wildcats with 218 and 220 for a 438 total, Tyler Heichel added 209, Mike Magyar a 205 and James Roberts a 204. The regular game points were eight for Western and ten for Oxford – so again, the Baker points were the dealmaker. Waterford Kettering was the final winner of the day, bettering Walled Lake Northern 25-5 in a contest that was decided before the second game even started. Kettering grabbed all ten Baker points and then six of nine points in the first regular game to insure the victory. Ryan Van Nest led the Captains with a 233 game in 406,, and Adam Lessel added a nice 214 to the cause. For Northern, Eric Fetzner was high with 213 in 412. So the stage is set: #! Central will do battle with #3 Clarkston for the tournament championship, and #4 Mott will meet #2 Lake Orion for 3rd & 4th place finishes – and both contests have the promise of high energy and big scores. In varsity girls action, #1 Waterford Kettering kept their hopes alive for the tournament championship as they defeated Clarkston 20-10 in a contest where only one point separated the two teams through the first regular game. Then Kettering stepped up to take seven of nine possible points in game two to assure the win. Holly Broadwater was high for the Captains with a nice 220-179-399 effort, and she had help from Hannah Reber’s 215 and Brianna Stieler’s 209 giving the team a nice, balanced win. For Clarkston, Kelly Anderson had a good outing with 223 and 210 for 433, but needed a little more help to keep up with the hot Kettering team. #2 Walled Lake Central easily downed Walled Lake Northern 26-4 in a match that was closer than the numbers would suggest. Grabbing ten points out of the gate in the Baker games, Central went on to secure the win by earning seven of nine points in the first regular game. Jamie Zarnick again lead her team with a nice 235-424 effort, and close behind was Sarah Johnson with a 234 game, and Chelsea Castle with a 212-203-415 series. Caitlin Mein was the start of the day for Northern as she raced to a conference-high 254 game and 468 series. But she alone could not carry the rest of the team, and the Northern team will be doing battle with a touch Clarkston team in the match to settle 3rd and 4th places in the tournament. Waterford Mott advances to the face Northern as a result of meeting the bye team in the second round, and Oxford will do battle with the bye team after a win over Lake Orion 19-11. Kristy Kaer came to life for the Mott with a very steady 219-211-430 outing, Kayla Land added 195 in 365 and Kristin Schultz 196 in 361 in a nice day for the Corsairs. For the Oxford Wildcats, Sarah Decker was high with a nice 189 game, and Kelly Cartner had 185 in 343. Lead by Kelsey Kohut’s 214 efforts, Lake Orion nearly evened this match by taking seven points in the first regular game. But Oxford answered back with seven points of their own in game two to grab the win. Again, those darn Baker points made the difference, with all ten going Oxford’s way. The match for all the marbles will pit #1 Kettering against #2 Walled Lake Central. It promises to be a wild affair, with Kettering looking to prove they are indeed the conference champs and Central ready to prove otherwise. Remember, it was these two teams that had to roll-off to decide the conference champs for the regular season – and now they get to do it again in the final post-season event. Stay tuned – fasten your seat belts – and let the games begin! RESULTS OF ROUND 2 MATCHES VARSITY BOYS Walled Lake Central def. Waterford Mott 18-12 Clarkston def. NORTHERN LAKES BOWLERS INTO POST-SEASON TOURNAMENT PLAY
Most of the top seeds in all divisions of the Northern Lakes Conference of High School Bowling won their matches as teams competed in round one of the post-season tournament at 300 Bowl Sunday afternoon in Waterford. While there may not have been any surprises in the team results, some new individual faces joined the perennial performers to catch some of the limelight. Adam Lessel, Waterford Kettering, rose to the occasion and rolled the high game of the day for all the boys with a sizzling 258. He did not bowl the first game, but little would have mattered as a strong team from Clarkston stepped up ‘big time’ and rolled the high team game in the conference for the year with an impressive 1112. Paul Anderson (244), Pat Zuker (244), Travis Nesbitt (223) Jake Smith (206) and Jim Stapleton (197) raced off to that big start and never looked back. After taking both Baker games in style, shooting 224 and 215, the team rang up a total 2012 pins for the day, and will meet Lake Orion’s big guns in round two of the tournament. #1 Walled Lake Central raced off to a big start in the Baker games as they tossed 255 and 444, and then walked away with a win over Walled Lake Western 21-9, with Jake Reid tossing 222 and a conference-high series of 440. Steve Hamilton added a nice 226 game, and Ethan Michael shot a consistent 204-205-409 for the winners. Marc Sanchez was the big shooter for the Western team with a solid 236 in 424, while Keven Watler tossed 230-378 and Ben Rhode added 221 in 373. #4 Waterford Mott easily downed #5 Oxford in a lop-sided 25-5 affair, with Carl Boldt stepping up to be the team leader with a 233 and 435 effort. The Corsairs won eight of ten Baker points, and then nearly swept the first regular game grabbing eight of the possible nine points. At that point, the match was already in their pocket and they could relax, knowing well they will face #1 Central next week in round two of the tournament. Steve Lafnear was the high roller for the Wildcats with a 209-371, and James Roberts added a steady 180-180-360. In the final varsity boys’ match, Lake Orion had to come back from dropping all ten Baker points to get past Walled Lake Northern 18-12. The Dragons had no big games in the first regular game as all players rolled between 161 and 189 to total 879. The second game is were Jeff Suma tossed his 235 game, giving him a nice 420 for the day, and John Frye added 213 for 377 to lock up the win. Eric Fetzner was high for the Northern squad with a solid 205-208 for 413. In varsity girls’ action, where there are only seven teams, #1 Waterford Kettering had the luxury of a bye to the second round. The girls still needed to bowl for their averages and season statistics, and there were good efforts from Sarah Nagel with 219 in 213 for 432, Holly Broadwater with 202 in 373, and Jessica Kidwell’s 192-183-375 outing. #5 Clarkston downed #4 Waterford Mott in a match that could have gone either way going in to the second regular game. Mott’s Sophomore Kayla Land had the hot hand for the Corsairs, as well as the entire conference, she raced to the high game and series of the day for the girls with a hot 256 and 449. Land needed a little more help, however, to hold off a strong Clarkston gang that raced to a lofty 1009 total in a game that included a very solid 245 game from Amanda Bartenbaker, a pair of 204’s from Amy Arpke and Kelly Anderson, and a 198 from Jessie Lambouris. Clarkston now gets to face #1 Kettering in round two. #3 Walled Lake Northern had one of the biggest wins of the day, trouncing the #6 Lake Orion girls 28-2. Northern took all ten Baker points, then grabbed eight of nine points in the first regular game to seal the deal. Caitlin Mein led the Northern team with 226 in 400, in a contest where each individual match was fairly close, but the eventual wins went Northern’s way. Danielle Geiger led the Dragons with a nice 218-388 effort, and Kelsey Smedley added 207 in 381 to the cause. The final match pitted #2 Walled Lake Central against #7 Oxford in another contest where the outcome was never in doubt. Central, led by average-leader Jamie Zarnick’s 223 in 419, waltzed to a win 28-2 over a Wildcat team that just couldn’t seem to get anything going. Chelsea Castle added a 201 in 379 and Sarah Johnson a 191 in 367 to the winning cause. Kelly Cartner was high for Oxford with 165 and Ashlee High was close behind with 164 in 317. So the stage is set for round two of post-season action that will take place at Wonderland Lanes on Saturday, February 9, starting at 1:30pm. This will be the last chance to see our up-and- coming junior varsity players in conference action, as they will travel to the JV State Tournament at Sunnybrook Lanes on February 16 and 17. Their conference post-season tournament will end at Wonderland next week, while the varsity ranks will be deciding who will and who won’t advance to the championship matches at Airway Lanes on February 17th. The Northern Lakes conference has some of Michigan’s biggest hitters in Central’s Eric Christensen and Jamie Zarnick, as well as other players who have been spotted on the ‘radar’ including Steve Hamilton, Stuart Leser, Paul Anderson, Robert Bondon, and Brianna Stieler. Now would be an excellent time to get out and watch these terrific kids in action as they prepare for the MHSAA regional competition at Wonderland Lanes on February 22 and 23. JUNIOR VARSITY ACTION
There were some very nice scores Sunday by members of the junior ranks, showing they are more than ready to step up to the varsity level next year, and definitely willing to make some noise at the JV State Tournament two weeks from now. Walled Lake Central’s well is clear and deep, as their JV squad rolled scores that would have defeated every varsity team in action except Clarkston’s. Bryan Berg continues to shine as he tossed a big 247 game, and a 460 series that was better than all the varsity players bowling at 300 Bowl. Colton Canfield tossed a 222, Adam Liposky 203, and Ricky Palarchio 200 in addition to Berg’s big game to get a grand total of 1020 for the game – a score that any varsity team would gladly take. And all those big scores nearly didn’t get the job done! Clarkston has depth as well. Nate Keck led the way with 214 and 216 in 430, Chris Benedict tossed 200, and Zack Farough added 192. It was the Baker games that made this a close match – with Central dropping all ten Baker points to Clarkston’s 192-201effort. The Baker games were close, but Clarkston got the points, putting all the pressure on Central to make a come back. Come back they did, and with a vengence! Kettering’s Mike Papciak continues to be on a roll, tossing 211 in 400, again leading the Captains to a win over Lake Orion. Chris Budrow added a beautiful 235 game in 390, and Scott Bridson added a 202 to the cause. For the Dragons, Bryan Yang was high with a very nice 236 in 416, and Zach Mitchell added 219 in 384. Oxford emerged victorious over Walled Lake Western in a close match18-12. Brandon Wynkoop tossed 226, John Taylor a 207 and 357, and Ross Hadden added a 203 game to the winning cause. For Walled Lake Western, Teil Smith was high with a 197-171 effort. Waterford Mott won the closest match of the entire tournament as they downed Walled Lake Northern 15.5-14.5. It came down to one player making a spare for the win – and all the practice paid off. Ryan Nall was high for the Corsairs with 221 in 412, Ryan Margossian added a 178 game and Anthony Ware a 171 game for the winners. For Northern, Nick Carson was high with 189 and 367, and Brian Phipps added 171 in 331. Again, it was the Baker points that made this contest interesting – Northern got ‘em all, and Mott had to mount a comeback. Matches like these, where youngsters have to perform under that kind of pressure, is what playing at the JV level is all about: getting ready for the ‘big leagues’! The JV girls’/Co-ed action also shows great things to come down the road. For the co-ed boys, Lake Orion’s Trae Bonds paced his team to a win over Clarkston by shooting 225 in 430. Anthony Bullock added a 215 game for the Dragons, and Allison Berwick was high for all the JV girls with a 169-157 outing. Walled Lake Western’s Carlee Klein was second-best of the day with 170 in 323, but her effort was not enough to help her team overcome the challenge set forth by the Walled Lake Northern co-ed team. Again, those Baker points made the difference, with Northern taking all ten by a grant total of 17 pins. The first regular game was nearly as close, with Northern sqeaking out that win by only 20 pins. But, they were able to grab seven of nine available points to lock up the victory. Garrett Currie was the leader for Northern with 162 and 301, and Bethany Beuerle was high for the gals with 158 in 296.
Waterford Kettering won their match with Oxford in another affair where one team lost all the Baker points. This time it was Kettering that had to ‘put out the fire’, and they came charging back with a 653 game that won eight of nine points. Now, it was a two-point match. The Captains tossed a near-identical 654 in game #2, again taking eight of nine points, and took home the win. Heather Higgins was high for Kettering with her 258-307 effort, and Taylor Thomas added a nice 151 game for the winners. Kristin Wygocki was the leader for the Wildcats with 139 in 246. The final match of the day pitted Waterford Mott against Walled Lake Central Co-ed, with Central emerging the winner. Jeremy Allen was high for the guys in this pairing with 192 in 332, and Sara VanVliet added 139 for the girls. For Mott, Melissa Fairbrother tossed a nice 159 and Krsitin Matsumoto added 152 in 289.

NORTHERN LAKES CONFERENCE NAMES 2007-08 CHAMPIONS
It took three and a half hours and three roll-offs at Airway Lanes in Waterford before all the results were in after back-to-back days of competition in the Northern Lakes Conference of High School Bowling. The varsity girls’ division delivered the most drama as Waterford Kettering and Walled Lake Central finished the regular season with identical 6-1 records. Conference by-laws dictate that a best two-of-three Baker game match is used to break ties for both first and second places, so it was off to yet another round of intense action to decide the 2008 champs. To get to the roll-off, Kettering defeated the bye team by matching their scores with Walled Lake Northern’s scores tossed in their match with Central. It was strictly the luck of the draw that scores of all three teams tied for first going in to Sunday’s action would be the factors in the outcome of the regular matches. Kettering won that battle with the bye team 22-8, while Central and Northern battled it out against each other with Central emerging the winner 21-9. Sarah Nagel stepped up for the Kettering girls with a solid 214 in 398, and Central had good performances from Jamie Zarnick with a 215 game, and Chelsea Castle with 422. Terra Derr was high for Northern with a 204 game, and Caitlin Mein added 366. The roll-off went down to the third game, where every ball thrown was crucial. There were the strikes from both teams, but it came down to a few missed spares by the Central girls that handed the championship to the Kettering squad. It was a great, exciting, match and terrific theater! The varsity boys’ race was the only division that did not involve any ties for first or second place. Walled Lake Northern would have to defeat Walled Lake Central, Clarkston would need to defeat Oxford, and either Lake Orion or Waterford Mott would be in the mix at 5-2, due to the fact they were opposing each other, for any chance of a roll-off to take place. As it happened, Oxford downed Clarkston, and even with Danny Tursell’s fabulous 269 game and 461 series, Northern couldn’t handle powerhouse Central. As a result of those two contests, the match between Waterford Mott and Lake Orion, in which Lake Orion won by a tiebreaker, became a non-factor. So, Walled Lake Central goes in to the records as being the Northern Lakes’ Conference last varsity boys champions, and their varsity girls’ team finishes as the runner-up in their race. Not bad. JV boys and Co-ed/JV girls races were both settled by roll-offs for runner-up honors, while the Central boys and the Clarkston girls could relax and enjoy the fact they had won their respective races. Waterford Kettering’s Mike Papciak had back-to-back good days, tossing 258 in 442 in the Saturday matches at Collier Lanes and 246 in 441 at Airway. Teammate Jakob Fincannon also tossed a league-high 246 game Sunday in Kettering’s win over Walled Lake Western. But again, it was Walled Lake Central that walked off with first place in the division with a 6-1 record, with the bragging rights of being the only team that had first place locked up going in to the final day of action. Kettering and Lake Orion finished with identical records of 5-2, and it was the Dragons that prevailed in that roll-off to claim runner-up honors. In the Co-ed/JV Girl’s race, Clarkston came out on top of the heap with a 6-1 record, and Walled Lake Northern found themselves in a roll-off with cross-town rival Walled Lake Western to decide the second place winner. Going in to the day, there was a three-way tie for second. But Kettering lost their match to Western, knocking them out of contention, while Lake Orion defeated Waterford Mott to stay in the mix. With Clarkston celebrating in the wings, Northern and Western went back to the lanes and more nail biting, with Northern finally grabbing the win and second place. Walled Lake Western’s Penny Brotz tossed a nice 199 game, as did Stephanie Wiley for her Clarkston team. Wiley was high for the day in the JV ranks with a 382 series – and if anyone has doubts as to the future of high school bowling around here, just take a look at what the kids are doing at the junior varsity level, and your mind will be at ease. The conference now goes in to its post-season tournament that runs for the final three weeks of the season. Matches consist of a mixture of regular and Baker games, and are set up in a bracket format. The junior varsity post-season tournament will only cover two weeks, as those teams will be competing in the JV state tournament at Sunnybrook Lanes on February 16 and 17. The first round of the tournament will be on Sunday, February 3rd, at 300 Bowl in Waterford. Doors open at 9:30 and action begins at 11:00. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for students.
